Pre-Monsoon Car Maintenance Checklist for Jharkhand: 15 Must-Do Steps

Why Monsoon Preparation Matters in Jharkhand

Jharkhand receives over 1,200 mm of rainfall between June and September, with Ranchi alone getting heavy showers that turn roads into temporary streams. Waterlogged stretches near Kanke Road, Ratu Road, and the Namkum bypass are common every year. Without proper monsoon preparation, your car risks rust damage, brake failure, electrical shorts, and reduced tyre grip.

At Poddar Motors Real Value, we recommend completing this checklist by the end of May — before the first rains hit.

Tyre and Brake Safety

1. Check Tyre Tread Depth

Worn tyres are the single biggest monsoon hazard. Your tyres need at least 3mm of tread depth for safe wet-road grip. Use the rupee coin test — insert a ₹1 coin into the tread groove. If you can see the entire lion capital emblem, your tyres need replacing.

For Jharkhand roads, we recommend all-season tyres from brands like MRF ZVTV, CEAT SecuraDrive, or Apollo Amazer. These offer excellent wet grip without breaking the bank.

2. Inflate Tyres to Correct Pressure

Under-inflated tyres increase stopping distance on wet roads by up to 30%. Check and adjust tyre pressure to manufacturer specs every fortnight during monsoon. Most petrol pumps in Ranchi — including those on Circular Road, Main Road, and Kanke Road — offer free air.

3. Inspect Brake Pads and Fluid

Wet roads demand brakes that work perfectly. Get your brake pads inspected — they should have at least 4mm of material remaining. Also check brake fluid levels and quality. If the fluid appears dark brown instead of light amber, it needs replacement.

4. Test Your Handbrake

Jharkhand has numerous inclined roads, especially in areas like Morabadi, Harmu, and the roads leading to Jonha Falls. A weak handbrake combined with a wet slope is a recipe for disaster.

Electrical and Visibility

5. Replace Worn Wiper Blades

Wiper blades deteriorate in Jharkhand's summer heat. If your wipers streak, chatter, or leave unwiped patches, replace them before June. A good pair costs just ₹400–800 and can be the difference between seeing the road and not.

6. Check All Lights

Heavy rain reduces visibility dramatically. Check all lights — headlamps (both low and high beam), tail lamps, brake lights, fog lamps, reverse lights, and indicators. Replace any dim or burnt-out bulbs immediately.

7. Inspect Battery and Electrical Connections

Moisture and humidity during monsoon can corrode battery terminals and cause starting problems. Clean the terminals with a wire brush, apply petroleum jelly to prevent corrosion, and test the battery voltage. If your battery is older than 3 years, consider a preventive replacement.

8. Test the AC Defogging System

Fogged-up windshields are a constant monsoon problem. Test your AC and rear defogger to ensure they clear fog quickly. If your AC takes too long to defog, you may need a refrigerant top-up or a cabin air filter replacement.

Body and Underbody Protection

9. Get Underbody Anti-Rust Coating

Jharkhand's red soil mixed with rainwater creates a corrosive slurry that attacks your car's underbody. An anti-rust coating (₹2,000–5,000 depending on car size) creates a protective barrier that lasts an entire monsoon season. This is especially important for cars older than 3 years.

10. Check Door and Window Seals

Cracked or worn rubber seals around doors, windows, and the boot lid allow water to seep in, causing musty odours and electrical damage. Press along all seals to check for gaps. Replacement seals are affordable (₹500–2,000 per door) and easy to install.

11. Apply Paint Protection

The combination of rain, mud, and acidic pollutants can damage your car's paint. A good coat of wax or ceramic coating before monsoon protects the paint and makes washing easier. Budget option: a quality wax job (₹1,500–3,000). Premium option: ceramic coating (₹8,000–15,000).

Engine and Drivetrain

12. Check Engine Oil and Coolant

Monsoon humidity can cause moisture to mix with engine oil, reducing its effectiveness. Check the oil dipstick — if the oil looks milky or frothy, it needs changing. Also ensure coolant levels are optimal, as the engine works harder in wet conditions.

13. Inspect the Air Filter

A clogged air filter reduces engine performance and fuel efficiency. In dusty Jharkhand conditions followed by monsoon, the air filter works overtime. Replace it if it looks dirty or has done more than 10,000 km.

14. Check Exhaust System

Ensure your exhaust pipe is clear and the tail pipe has no cracks. During waterlogged conditions, water can enter through a damaged exhaust system and cause engine damage — one of the most expensive repairs you can face.

15. Test the Spare Tyre and Jack

Getting a flat on a rainy Jharkhand road is already stressful. Don't make it worse by discovering your spare tyre is flat too. Check spare tyre pressure monthly and ensure the jack and wheel wrench are present and functional.
