How to Inspect a Used Car Before Buying: The Complete 20-Point Guide
Why a Thorough Inspection Is Non-Negotiable
In the Indian used car market, what you see is not always what you get. Repainted panels hide accident damage, tampered odometers show false mileage, and polished engines mask leaks. Whether you're buying from a private seller or an unverified dealer in Jharkhand, a systematic inspection can save you lakhs in future repair bills.

Exterior Body Inspection (Points 1–6)
1. Check Panel Gaps and Alignment
Stand at each corner of the car and look along the body panels. All gaps between the bonnet, doors, boot lid, and fenders should be uniform and consistent. Uneven gaps indicate previous accident damage and poor bodywork repair.
2. Run the Magnet Test
Carry a small refrigerator magnet. Run it across all body panels. The magnet should stick uniformly everywhere. If it doesn't stick or feels weak in certain areas, that panel has been filled with body filler (putty) to hide dent or accident damage.
3. Inspect Paint Consistency
Examine the car in daylight. Look for colour differences between adjacent panels — for example, if the front fender is slightly different from the door next to it, that panel has been repainted. Also check for orange-peel texture (rough paint surface) and overspray on rubber seals and trim pieces.
4. Check for Rust
Jharkhand's humid climate and monsoon rains make rust a serious concern. Check these rust-prone areas carefully:
- Wheel arches and wheel wells
- Door sills (open the door and check the lower edge)
- Boot floor (lift the boot carpet)
- Under the bonnet, along the edges
- Underbody (use your phone torch to look underneath)
5. Examine All Glass
Check the windshield and all windows for chips, cracks, and scratches. Small chips can be repaired, but large cracks mean a full windshield replacement (₹5,000–15,000 depending on the car). Also check that all windows operate smoothly.
6. Inspect Headlights and Tail Lights
Yellowed, foggy, or mismatched headlights indicate age or replacement after an accident. Check for moisture condensation inside the light housings — this indicates broken seals.
Engine and Mechanical (Points 7–12)
7. Check the Engine Oil
Pull the oil dipstick and examine the oil. Good oil is light amber and translucent. Warning signs: milky/frothy oil (head gasket issue), very dark and gritty oil (neglected maintenance), or oil level significantly above or below the marks.
8. Inspect Coolant Condition
Open the radiator cap (only when the engine is cold) and check the coolant. It should be green or pink and clear. Brown or rusty coolant indicates corrosion in the cooling system. Also check for an oily film on the surface — this can indicate a head gasket leak.
9. Look for Leaks
After the car has been parked for a while, check the ground underneath for any fluid spots. Oil leaks appear dark brown/black, coolant leaks appear green/pink, and transmission fluid leaks appear red. Any active leak is a potential expensive repair.
10. Listen to the Engine
Start the car from cold (not pre-warmed by the seller). Listen for:
- Tapping noise: Could indicate worn valve lifters or low oil pressure
- Knocking sound: Potentially serious engine bearing wear
- Whistling: Possible vacuum leak or turbo issue
- Rough idle: Could indicate ignition or fuel system problems
The engine should idle smoothly without vibrations and settle to a steady RPM within seconds of starting.
11. Check the Exhaust
Look at the exhaust smoke at startup and during revving:
- Blue smoke: Engine is burning oil — potentially expensive repair
- White smoke (persistent): Coolant leaking into combustion chamber — head gasket failure
- Black smoke: Rich fuel mixture — usually a sensor or fuel injector issue
12. Test the Transmission
For manual cars, check clutch engagement point — if it engages very high (near the top of pedal travel), the clutch is worn. For automatic cars, ensure smooth shifting through all gears without jerks, delays, or unusual noises.
Interior and Electrical (Points 13–16)
13. Check the Odometer Reading
While odometer tampering is hard to detect digitally, look for corroborating evidence. A car claiming 30,000 km should not have a heavily worn steering wheel, pedal rubbers, or driver's seat. Cross-check the odometer reading with service history records and the MoRTH Vahan portal.
14. Test All Electrical Features
Systematically test every electrical feature: power windows, central locking, infotainment system, reverse camera, parking sensors, power mirrors, seat adjusters, USB/AUX ports, 12V sockets, and the horn. Electrical repairs can be surprisingly expensive.
15. Check the AC System
Run the AC on maximum cooling. It should blow cold air within 2–3 minutes. Check all vents, test the blower at all speed settings, and listen for unusual compressor noises. AC compressor replacement alone costs ₹15,000–30,000.
16. Inspect the Interior Condition
Check seats for tears, stains, and excessive wear. Examine the dashboard for cracks (common in Jharkhand's heat). Check the headliner for sagging. Most importantly, smell the interior — a musty or mouldy smell indicates water ingress, which is a serious structural concern.
Tyres, Suspension, and Test Drive (Points 17–20)
17. Inspect All Tyres (Including Spare)
Check tread depth (minimum 3mm recommended), look for uneven wear patterns (indicates alignment or suspension issues), and check tyre age (stamped on the sidewall — replace tyres older than 5 years). Mismatched tyre brands suggest hasty replacements.
18. Bounce Test for Suspension
Push down firmly on each corner of the car and release. The car should bounce back once and settle. If it continues bouncing, the shock absorbers are worn. This test is especially important for cars driven on Jharkhand's rough roads.
19. Test Drive on Different Roads
Drive the car for at least 15–20 minutes covering:
- City traffic with frequent stops (test clutch, brakes, AC)
- A stretch of highway (test engine power, vibrations at speed, wind noise)
- Speed breakers and rough patches (test suspension, body rattles)
- A quiet stretch to listen for unusual noises
20. Check the Steering
The steering should be smooth and responsive with no play (slack) at the centre position. Any vibration through the steering wheel at highway speeds usually indicates wheel balancing issues or worn suspension components. The car should track straight when you briefly let go of the wheel.
Document Verification Checklist
- Original RC (Registration Certificate) — check owner name matches seller
- Insurance policy — check validity and claim history
- PUC certificate — valid and current
- Service history records — verify mileage consistency
- No pending loans — check hypothecation status on RC
- No pending challans — verify on Parivahan portal
- No theft record — cross-check chassis and engine numbers
